I have just bought a new tv, that supports 720p, and I have been using a mini-DVI to DVI and then DVI to HDMI plus an optical digital cable to send the picture and sound from my MacBook to my reciever and then the picture to my tv...

It works (almost) perfectly, but I have been experiencing some odd crashes by VLC when playing a video that has a digital output (5.1 endcoded sound). It happens when I put on subtitles or when I while playing the video on an "extended desktop" do other stuff that sends out a sound signal (stuff like playing Quinn)...
VLC stalls for a moment then crashes and so does the soundcard driver. Sometimes the soundcard driver will start to work again after a while of no external display or optical digital connection, but at other times the soundcard driver requires a computer reboot...

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what tweaks I should do to stop the crashes? Is this a software related problem or is the MacBook simply just not well enough equipped to handle a 720p signal in VLC, digital audio and subtitles at the same time?
