I have a late 2008 non-unibody macbook pro 17".. it has been running pretty decent, but recently I noticed it's making a kind of whining noise that's coming from the area to the left of the trackpad. Is that where the hard drive is? possibly I should think about replacing it? I'm still under Applecare for a few more months, though.. should I give them a call maybe? Any diagnostic tools I can use to check on the health of parts etc?

The hard drive is indeed located under the left palm rest.

Usually software is a bit too late in noticing a hard drive is going bad. I'd do a time machine backup(or another backup method of your choosing) to be on the safe side. You may want to ring Apple if you still have Apple Care, a hard drive may be inexpensive, but one replaced free with a warranty is even cheaper.
