I have an AppleTV4K connected to a modern Marantz Cinema receiver and then to a TV. Today I was streaming Apple Music and it stopped when I turned off the TV (to conserve power). I've gotten lost in all the current and changing constraints, but I thought this used to work... or am I mistaken or confused.... again.

It's likely that you have CEC turned on, so when you turn TV off, it turns off AppleTV and/or Marantz. One option is to hop into the menus and turn off CEC... but then you will have to take over that chore manually (of turning each piece on and off). You MIGHT be able to turn CEC off on the TV alone so that turning off TV won't turn off AppleTV & Receiver, so that's worth a try (but again, that means you'll have to manually turn on AppleTV which then turns on Marantz and YOU have to push power on the TV or TV remote to turn it on too).

Option 2: try audio splitters/extractor: HDMI out of AppleTV into extractor, extracted audio to Marantz. This is hit or miss. Some extractors work and others don't. The magic here is getting usable audio out when you want audio only and full passthrough 4K video (and possibly HDR video) through when you want video. People share having to try a variety of them to find one that does both well.

AppleTVs used to easily solve this and Receiver Zone 2 issues by including a simple AUX out 3.5mm jack. But then they decided to "improve" upon that, which leads to needed workarounds like paying more for extractors.

Option 3: check the modern Marantz documentation to see if it supports Airplay. Many modern receivers do. If so, bypass both AppleTV and your TV by "throwing" audio directly to the Marantz. This is an ideal option if your Marantz has Airplay. I most frequently do what you want to do this way.

Thanks for the ideas

I think this TV was built prior to CEC, but I'll have to double check. :) Both the receiver and AppleTV remain powered on, however.

My understanding is that airplay does not send lossless unless you are streaming from an older iTunes version thats new enough to be compatible with the receiver.

Otherwise I've been playing lossless and CD quality Music from a USB stick.

I've used extractors with the AppleTV for years but recent OS updates has broken that.

Ahhh, with those kinds of wants, you might consider allocating a Mac mini to the A/V stack and direct connecting it to the Marantz if you can't get AppleTV with TV off to stay ON. I have attached a mostly retired old Mini to my Receiver for some specific wants in that direction. If you can get the whole lossless library on it, think of it as your music hub. Home share can stream it to other Macs in the house, so you fee up the storage space on newer Macs.

I'm pretty sure that if you can find the right extractor, it can offer you a way there too... but that's much easier to write than do. People share they have to work through several to find one. I've tried a few myself and most have no trouble extracting the audio but won't pass through 4K and HDR video even if they are advertised to do so. I gave up on that and Airplay non-lossless audio but I've read others who claimed extractor success.

Also, if you have a phone to retire, you might be able to direct attach it to Marantz and basically relegate it to a lossless iPod jukebox function. I haven't tried that but it should work. Give an old iPhone something to do than lay in a drawer and/or landfill.

Moving my mini media server to near the receiver may be my next step. But I wanted to double check here before I went there. But then it is probably not that important as the mini is running an itunes and OS version that streams at least CD quality if not lossless directly to the receiver.
