Stream video download before complete?

I just got my mac and was downloading an avi movie file and before on my PC i could just open the file in VLC and start watching it but when i tried that on my mac it didnt work.

I hate waiting for a full movie or whatever to completely download before i can start watching it...any suggestions? thanks

VLC works the same on both platforms, as far as I know. Perhaps your torrent had simply not downloaded the segments at the beginning of the file, which is where all players start to read, and determine from there which kind of file it is and if it can be played.
