Stream videos from router to iPad via external HD app?

So I just got File Browser app to view my videos from my external hd which is connected to my router via USB port in back the back of the router. So I can view a few videos, but many say cannot play and to copy streaming URL...

Are there any apps where I can paste the url into or a better app that has more compatibility?

What do you use for sharing? UPnP, FTP, SMB? Depending on this, I will be able to recommend a good one. (Unfortunately, there isn't a player that plays over these networks equally well.)
