Streaming a video file over the internet??

Hi everyone, I didn't know where to put this, so hopefully this is the right spot. My girlfriend and I are long distance at the moment, but we wanted to watch a movie together over the internet. I have the video file on my laptop, but not exactly sure how to stream it over the internet so we can watch it at the same time? I tried the VLC method, but I keep getting an error... Can anyone help? :confused:
