Does anyone know if it is ppossible to stream all sound via an airport express and not just music played within iTunes?

I have been wondering about just that after I set up my AE for the first time a couple of days ago. Excellent.
Thanks for sharing

DVD sound too?

I've been holding an AP because I though I couldn't stream the sound coming from DVD playing to my Hi-fi, only music.

Do you confirm that airfoil will work with the DVD playing software too?

Thanks!

if you read the faq on the airfoil site it would answer you question. long story short, it won't work because the network latency. The Airport express causes the sound in a buffer before it starts playing similar to what a anti-skip cd-player does. Anyway, video and sound wouldn't sync up and there isn't anyway around it. Trying to sync it manually YMMV.

Why does the audio lag?
Because of the way the AirPort Express works, there's a delay from the time audio is played locally to the time it is heard remotely. Unfortunatel, the issue here is with the hardware itself.

Can I use this while watching movies?
Many users want to watch movies on their computer and send the audio to remote speakers connected to an AirPort Express. Unfortunately, because of the latencies in the AirPort Express hardware, the audio will lag behind the video. While not recommended, this problem can sometimes be worked around, using VLC. VLC allows a movie's audio to be manually de-synced from the video. In this way, you can play the audio a second or so ahead of the video, and sync the two. For more information, see the "Watching Movies" page of the Airfoil manual.

right... it was too good to be true.

Anyone aware of another streaming option for MAC that supports DVD audio streaming.... or even video?

Thanks!

there isn't anything that support full dvd quality streaming. You are still faced with a hardware problem, i.e. there isn't any.

Hello Audio and Video Folks

PLEASE ANSWER THIS POST

I might have a 5 year old problem, maybe. Tech moved on so am I now able to stream the sound of my movies watched on my MBP to my stereo?

Has anything changed? Airfoil DOES provide a DVD player to sync but is it necessary yet?

Thank You

Answer

OK, I did the test on my own, bought an Airport Extreme and connected it to my Stereo. Without Airfoil there is no way to stream other Audio than iTunes to my Stereo. With Airfoil it works, but although the video player does play DVD (or mounted DVD images) it is not able to interact with the DVD menu once playing the DVD content.

VLC is the better choice. To be in sync press and hold F until the delay is -2000ms.

Rented an iTunes movie for the first time yesterday. Unfortunately Airfoil is of no help here because of the rights/permission/copy protection used by iTunes. Of course they don't tell you this on their website but not until you bought, installed and tried to use it with iTunes for the first time.

Also checked VLC but I didn't find out how to stream the sound to the Airport Express. As far as I know you can't change the audio-out in VLC. Or did I just miss something?

Or you could try it out using the free trial that they offer, will stream for 10 minutes at a time before you have to restart the program.

or if you look through their site.
If you watch a video in iTunes, QuickTime, VLC, or any other video player, then transmit the audio with Airfoil, you will notice a distinct delay between the local on-screen video and the remote audio playback.
and
Airfoil Video Player only supports local, non-DRMed video files and DVDs. Because we can not control playback of web video or DRMed iTunes Store video, they are not supported with Airfoil Video Player.
