While nice, the Space Invader is vandalism and the "artist" should have to pay for its removal if the owner of the property wants it gone.

I suppose it all depends where they are applying their 'art'.

The building in the picture looks almost derelict so it's a stretch to say it's defacing it.

Wikipedia entry on Space Invader

One rationale behind street art back in the 80's (back then it was just called graffiti) was that poor neighborhoods were being neglected by the politicians and looked like crap so the art actually made them nicer.

Back then street art was just a spray can though. Now it's stencils, stickers, LED's, tiles, etc.

Legally it's vandalism but I also think what these guys are doing has more artistic value than the usual crap I see at MOCA (paintings that look like giftwrap, shoes stuffed with dildos, etc)

We have those here in Manchester and I really like them. They aren't in your face and it's fun to try and spot them. I don't think any have been taken down.

If you ask me, they are another positive addition to the city and should definitely be allowed. Having said that, I think organising it and doing it in co-operation with the city and building owners is the way to go about it rather than just sticking them up. This way, we aren't setting a precedent for the less reputable side of graffiti, stencilling etc. and I don't think it will detract from anybodies enjoyment.

Here are some pictures and a map of the Manchester invaders...

http://www.space-invaders.com/map_manchester.html I live just near Victoria train station on this map, so I see them all the time in the local area.

I grew up in an area of London covered in street art, mostly murals spanning several buildings. Most of it was left as is, I only recall one piece being removed.

I felt enriched by each and every piece, they brightened my day.

I hope they don't get into any serious trouble.

That's sooo cool....

I know of an Artist who painted strange faces onto stickers and stuck them up in neighborhoods amongst the boarded properties and billboard areas and such - it was cool...

Saw the movie. I think they're all full of themselves. They can do whatever they want as long as they're not ruining other people's property.

If Space Invader, Banksy, or Shepard Fairey bombed the side of a building I owned, I'd leave it up and take a bunch of pictures.

Thierry Guetta, I'd call the cops

A few shots from the MOCA street art exhibit. Sorry for the crappy quality

1. New Banksy painting

2. Part of the exhibit is a reconstruction of a busted street market. Barry McGee's animatronic taggers are everywhere.

3. Dash Snow photos

4. Shepard Fairey's Obey Giant

5. Todd "REAS" James' Studio - part of the street market
