Stressed college student needs help with design!!

Hi, I have a poster to design for college. Left it all a bit too late, which I never usually do!

I need to have it designed for Friday afternoon so it can be printed. Basically I have an image in my head, simple enough. project is on how technology defines communities.

I was thinking a globe with joypads, telephone wires, and other things like cds, tvs, falling/dangling from it.
Other idea was a "spur of the moment" idea. think of the iphone home screen (very recognizable). however the apps are all elements of a community .. like family, friends, college, home, religion etc..

Perhaps my ideas arent the best but im not a graphic design student, at the end of the day, this is just an extra college course i took up..

What programmes will i need?
Can i download them and from where?
What do you think of my ideas? Any suggestions?

The second idea might be easier for you to do.

(putting the legality of using images aside) you could get something like GIMP and start cropping and pasting images on a picture of the iphone startpage.
