So I have a macbook i got in July of '08 and in the past week it sometimes gets stuck on the blue screen before it goes to the login page. Not everytime though so it's not a big deal but I have to restart it by the button and that makes me uncomfortable and it's a bit annoying. I know I can prevent it from going to the login screen but I don't want to because I don't like leaving my laptop where someone can easily mess with it so I set a password. Any clues on why it is doing this and do I need to worry about it getting worse or something bad causing it?

Try repairing permissions from Disk Utility. If that doesn't work, you might need to do an archive and install, looks like a startup file seems to be corrupted.
