I have an iPhone 4S; I never updated from 5.1.1 to 6.X.X. I intended to install 6.1.3 before 7.0 went public, but never got around to it. In settings, I still have an alert to update to 6.1.3; will I be forever stuck with iOS 5.1.1? Does anybody know how this works?

If you have an alert for iOS 6.1.3, simply upgrade to 6.1.3, and then upgrade to iOS 7.

Alternatively, you can upgrade directly to iOS 7 from iOS 5.1.1 through iTunes.

If you are being alerted to update to 6.1.3, then do it. Then go to 7.0 from there.

The only update iTunes (phone connected to mac) lists is 6.1.3. Should I do this right away? Or can I wait until a more convenient time?

You can do it whenever you feel comfortable.

You won't be locked to iOS 5.1.1 as long as the iPhone runs newer versions. You choose choose to upgrade to iOS 7 5 years from now if you wanted to.

Yeah, iOS 6 scared me. I run it on newer devices and its great, but I have read about and witnessed first hand some of the issues the 4S had with iOS 6 (namely battery life & Wi-Fi connectivity) so I held fast to good old stable 5.1.1. However, iCloud Keychain sounds too good to pass up.

Good to know.

Keychain isn't in the final build. It was only in the betas. It's now listed as Coming Soon and it'll probably launch alongside Mavericks in October.
