My elderly parents have a MacBook Air 13 inch. This from memory is 2015.

Their version of Safari had an issue opening Facebook and Facebook said that it wasn’t compatible with the version they had. (or words to that effect) I would need to get a more up-to-date version with their MacOS which from memory was high Sierra. I did a bit of research to establish which operating system was the newest version that was compatible with their 2015 model computer. I actually can’t remember now which that was but find it on the Internet and attempted to download it expecting it to be a relatively straightforward process. That was two days ago and the Mac is just saying 27 minutes to go on the download. I’ve now got the computer here at my house but a bit stuck in terms of what to do next. I’ve pressed and held the power button and then attempted to reboot hoping that that would sort it out but in fact it hasn’t. I’m sorry that I’m slightly vague on some of the specifications but now have no way to get into them to establish exactly what I had done.

It’s obviously not going to be connected to my Internet now, so there’s absolutely no way it will be able to download

They do have Time Machine and don’t have much in the way of data so if I need to do an entirely clean reinstall, then I could most probably do that if I can establish exactly how to.

Any pointers would be great

Shut down the laptop by holding down the power button. Boot the computer while holding down Shift+Command+R .. this is Internet Recovery. You should be prompted to select WiFi and enter WiFi credentials, although, I recommend one use hardwired ethernet as Internet Recovery can be flaky over WiFi.

Once Internet Recovery loads, install available macOS.

Thank you wigwaff. Luckily it finally burst into life. Had to set up a few bits and bobs but it’s working again. It hasn’t installed the newer iOS. But a bit more googling reveals that big sur is the final iOS to be compatible with the late 2014 air. I did however update safari.

Thanks again. Martin.
