iPod touch Stuck while updating apps from iTunes

I used my ipod touch today, after it had been out of wifi range for over a month. had 20 apps to update. Selected update all, and its been stuck on the first app for over an hour, says "loading", and "waiting" on the other 19 apps.
How do I stop the update and just get back to using the thing?!
