Hello all,
I am currently in college and was looking at leaving my parents cell phone plan and starting to pay for my own.
I was wondering if anybody knows of any good companies that offer discounts, or ways that I could somehow get a better deal on a plan?

Better deal than what? You could do what most of us do, shop around for the best deal that suits your needs. Am I missing something?
I'm asking if any other students have plans and got a discount and whatnot for being a student? And how to go about doing so

I've never heard of any company offering student discounts. If your phone is unlocked go with a prepaid plan, it is almost always cheaper. Also see what carriers are strongest where you want to use your phone, you can have the cheapest plan available, but it is a waste of money if you don't have service where you need it.

What is the best way to check coverage near me?

Talk to friends to see what they use and how happy they are with it, look at coverage maps (although they can often be optimistic about how much coverage you'll have), or you could post where you are, and there might be people from the same area on here that can give you an idea.

Any reason not to stay on the Family's plan? Just offer to pay your fraction of the bill.

I understand wanting some independence and it's admirable that you recognize your increasing responsibility. It's just that paying a fraction of a family plan will likely almost always be less expensive than having your own plan. Unless you know your parents' carrier won't work at your school, that's what I'd advise.

EDIT: I could understand a privacy aspect of wanting your own plan. I use prepaid, so don't get itemized bills, but I can imagine having parents see numbers you call/text and duration and time of day of calls, etc. could be concerning to someone in college! ;-)

But you haven't given us anything to go on. If all you want is cheap, buy a pay-as-you-go phone and don't use it when you don't have to. Or give it up altogether. But I imagine that might not suit your needs. So like I said, you want a discount compared to what?

Well we don't get unlimited data and whatnot, and I'm always the one that gets b*****d at for the data going over even though I use the least amount. So was looking into just going on my own plan.
I couldn't care about that seeing who I text/call lol. I'm a big boy, I call or text my girlfriend or the rest has to do with work or friends :).
Just tired of being the one that's always yelled at for nothing with the phone plan lol!

I'm not looking to pay 80-90 bucks for 1 phone on a plan
Right now I am looking at sprint,
I can get the data and such that I need for 30 bucks plus a phone for another 15 a month, so about 50$ plan
Just wasn't sure if they offered student discounts and whatnot with other companies.

Depends on your school. Both my undergrad and graduate schools give student discounts through AT&T and Verizon.

Sprint and TMo are not on either list. I think the FAN discount through AT&T was like 15% off. I have 27% off right, so the student discount is pretty worthless.

Alright, I will have to look into those companies and see the price then, I appreciate it. I found it for Verizon but did not see it for AT&T. The Verizon one doesn't accept my school for discounts
