Student Free iPod Deal - Upgrade to iPad?

I know it would be purely speculation at this point since Apple likely won't start the summer "free iPod touch" promotion until the end of this month, but I was wondering what people's thoughts were on whether Apple would let you upgrade to an iPad (i.e. - pay the difference between 8gb iPod Touch and iPad to upgrade)? Was anyone able to do this last summer with the deal?

I was thinking I would pay the difference and get the 32gb iPod Touch and then I realized why stop there when I could (maybe) get an iPad out of this.

Probably not. Apple does the iPod promotion to clear stock before the new iPod in Sept. If the update schedule of the iPad is going to be Q1, then theres no need to clear stock in the summer.

I'd probably be happy even if it was a first generation iPad being cleared out under the promotion
