Hello,

Since the launch of the studio display I’m wondering how would work this screen with an old Mac pro. With a thunderbolt PCI card and a Radeon 580 or vega 56 I guess we should be able to manage a 6k resolution as the displayport leverage the version 1.4

I’m thinking maybe to invest on a new Apple screen to replace my 24’’ led Cinema Display.

Has anyone tested the new Apple screen with an old cMP and how was your experience / which graphic card?

Thanks!

The Studio Display requires either two HBR2 signals encapsulated in a Thunderbolt 3 stream ("dual-link SST") or a single HBR2+DSC signal to do 5K60.
Neither the RX 580 or Vega 56 support DSC (a Navi GPU is required for that), so two DisplayPort signals going into a Thunderbolt 3/4 add-in card is your only choice for 5K60 in that case.
If you have a Navi GPU (RX 5000/6000) with support for DSC a single HBR2+DSC signal input via USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode (so you need an adapter) should provide 5K60 without a Thunderbolt connection.

So a Radeon RX 5700 should do the job. The cMP do not support the Rx 6000 serie.
