is it common for these LG panels to fail or burn pixels? wondering if it makes sense to buy AppleCare for 3 years. Never owned an iMac 5k.

The availability of AppleCare for the Studio Display is the main reason I want that one over the LG Ultrafine 5k. I had two 27 inch iMacs in the past, and both had panel issues. Both had half the backlight go out after 2 or 3 years. One did not have AppleCare and was insanely expensive to replace, so I just got rid of it. The second did have AppleCare and luckily was covered.

It's hard to spend $1,300 on the LG model when there's no additional warranty you can get for it to cover it.

For a display that you will be using for a looooong period of time, I went for it. The additional price for AppleCare+ is I think worth it because you will be using the monitor for a lot longer than a computer. I usually keep my monitors around for a decade.

Just my own reasoning why I purchased AppleCare+ for the Studio Display...

None for me - I am currently using 3 Thunderbolt displays and have not had an issue since day 1.

All 3 are still working after 11 years.

Same with my M1 Mini - never got AC+ - since it's a desktop and not much moves.

As for my M1 Macbook, iPad Pro, and 16" Intel MBP - yes did purchase the AC+ they are portables which get moved around and prone to more breakage....

im assuming nothing will go wrong as well but when I did get 1 pixel die on a MacBook Pro 2012 retina, apple swapped the whole display under apple care. I had the 2019 MBP and for some reason there appeared what looked like a water stain under the display in the corner. You could only see it in light mode not dark mode and it happened after about 14 months of daily use. This got me to purchase apple care for the new MacBook since apple didn't know what a new mini led panel would cost but its probably over $1000.

If you are in certain countries you can get an annual/monthly Apple Care + warranty (costs a bit more over 3 years) but then you can continue it beyond this if you wish; till either you get rid of it or Apple will no longer provide warranty support for it (they give 1 month warning of cancellation.)
