I am studying in Italy for about 5 months and plan on traveling within the continent and I am just trying to figure out what the best option for me is.

After reading a bunch different articles and forums out there it seems like you cannot put in a pre-paid SIM card from abroad unless your phone is unlocked; however if I unlock it, when I return to the states and put in my original SIM card will things just return to normal or will it reject it? Also, I heard AT&T can detect if your phone is unlocked and just re-lock it, is that true?

Also, I am not a big fan of the At&T International Plans and do not plan on making a lot of phone calls on my iPhone. I'd love to be able to use it as an iTouch with Wifi and was wondering if I just suspended my contract for those five months, would that work?

If you have any suggestions or tips about what you've heard or encountered, I'd really appreciate it! I just do not want to get ridiculous charges on my phone bill!
