stupid question about international sim card use?

I'm leaving for Trinidad in two days, i was wondering if i could buy a Digicel Sim card with a plan and use it in the iPhone. Would i have to unlock the phone first?

if it's a 3G iPhone you're out of luck - you can't unlock that yet (at least not without ordering equipment first)
