Hello.
I have my old faith MacBook pro mid 2012. Looks like I'm no longer supported to get future OS updates. Currently running OS Catalina.
My question is this:
Will I be able to sync music etc onto iPhone with future iOS updates or will I face problems down the line?

Cheers for any insight.

This is essentially a question no-one can answer. No one know what changes may be in iOS 15,16,17,…

However I would expect it will stop working eventually.

I would assume, if it uses iCloud, it would work just fine. But the truth is, nobody knows for sure.

"Will I be able to sync music etc onto iPhone with future iOS updates or will I face problems down the line?"

That's not a dumb question at all.

I don't use an iPhone or iPad, and I don't synch any music.

But my guess (and it's ONLY "a guess") is that somewhere down the line, at some point, we don't know when, but perhaps someday... the ability to do this with an older Mac running and older version of the OS will end, because the older Mac won't support the software updates required to do it.

But that's probably several years away yet, and I'll also guess that by the time it comes around, you may be using a newer Macbook Pro...

Well, nobody knows for sure, but tight now, looking at the spec of iPhone 11 Pro from Apple, they wrote:
  • Syncing to a Mac or PC requires:
  • macOS Catalina 10.15 using the Finder
  • macOS El Capitan 10.11.6 through macOS Mojave 10.14.6 using iTunes 12.8 or later
So looks like iPhone 11 is still supported by as low as El Capitan. I'm going to guess Catalina will still be able to support another 4 iOS updates (so probably iOS 17 or so).

With your current iPhone, it won't be a problem because it's designed to work with Catalina. It will work with Big Sur as well and probably the one after and so on. I have a iPhone 5S with iOS 11 which is working fine with Mavericks.

The problem will come sometime in the future when you get a new iPhone whose minimum requirement is, say, Big Sur. Then you won't be able to sync. Possibly.

Thanks for the replies. 👍
Well I just run my old faithful MacBook Pro as long as I can. Maybe in a few years ill treat myself to a new one..
