Apple assessed my 16PM and offered $700 trade-in value for it and I also have a $330 Apple Gift Card sitting around. If I were to trade in my 16PM for the 17PM, I would only pay around $170 out of pocket for the 17PM 256GB model.

Would I be stupid to not take advantage of that?

I have the 16PM since launch day last year and it has been one of the best iPhones I've owned - looks and performance, IMO. Battery Health has dropped down from 100% to now 96% in just the last 3 months and it has started running hot on the back under mild to heavy usage.

I'm just not excited about the PM going to aluminum and that new design on the back. 🫤

I'd say go for the 512GB model instead. A higher price to pay but will be nice if you are going to use it for longer than 1 year.

If you didn't pay for that gift card then yeah it makes perfect sense. But if you paid for that gift card or got it for a store credit or something then it's $500 out of your pocket

Based on current trade-in prices, next year you will probably get about $520 for your 16PM ($180 less than the current offer). So, it's up to you. If you want to upgrade now, go for it. If you can wait till next year and don't mind losing additional $180 then do that, but, the upgrade will be a "bigger" jump than going to 17PM.

Over the long term it’s always cheaper to hold on to a phone longer. Right now he’s got a gift card burning a hole in his pocket. Toss the gc in apple account and forget about iPhone 17. No doubt he’s a got a sub or two.

Yep, that's a good way to take care of the gift card.
