Subatomic Studios launched their long awaited sequel to Fieldrunners tonight. Fieldrunners was one of the early success stories on the App Store with an initial launch in October 2008.

The game was one of the first Tower Defense games in the App Store and has since been ported to a number of other platforms. Fieldrunners 2 builds on the popularity of the first game:
Fieldrunners 2 was looking fantastic in this nearly final state, and looks to do exactly what you want a sequel to a successful title to do. It keeps the things that made the original so great while simultaneously expanding upon them in new ways that won't alienate the core fan base. Also, it introduces new elements that they made sure fit in line with what you would expect from a Fieldrunners sequel, and at the same time the entire experience scales well to a hardcore and casual audience, making it much more approachable to a wider group of players.
The game is available for iPhone for $2.99. [iTunes Link]

Awesome! The team has been waiting around, refreshing the App Store non-stop and it's finally here! We're very excited to have made this game for you guys and hope you enjoy it.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate ask!

Loved the first game, but I don't see it on the App Store and don't have any money in my account right now. Can't wait to eventually try it out.

Not sure when it will actually appear on the app store in the traditional ways.

Regarding no iPad version, it's something that we have in the works. For what it's worth, people are already saying that the iPhone version looks amazing on iPad as well. I'm going to check that out right now, actually.

There will be a separate iPad version according to dev in tA forum:

Happy to share what I can about the iPad version, but there honestly isn't a whole lot to say. What we do with the iPad version will heavily depend on feedback about the iPhone version. That said, we've already started the basics and are well on our way. It's looking very sharp.

1. We're planning it as a separate app. An HD version.
2. We're not planning on making it an update, but that's an interesting idea...
3. It will not be universal. There has been some debate among fans about this and we are taking that into consideration.
4. This is the tough part. Fr1 for iPad came out a year after the iPhone version. In that time, we'd added 4 paid dlc maps to the iPhone version. When the iPad version launched, we just made those maps part of the core game and increased the price accordingly. The real gem in Fr1 iPad was the local multiplayer. So, our two options are make an up razzed version with the same content, or add content, which will take time. Fan feedback will determine what content we add, but it will also determine how much longer development on the iPad version will take.
5. Unfortunately, I can only speculate on this as well. We didn't finalize the price for the iPhone version until several days before launch, so I imagine that we won't have a price for the iPad version until it's much more developed.

Thank you very much for asking all these good questions! Feel free to send more my way and I'll answer as best i can.

Considering the new Ipad's retina screen, I'm really tempted to dive into this one and play it on 2x and save a few bucks. I have done this on plenty of games and they look totally fine.

Do you think we would really miss the visuals that much?
There last ipad version was $7.99, more than double this asking price.
I don't know if visuals are worth that much to me these days. Once you start playing, are you really going to notice it that much kinda thing...

I made a screenshot with iPad 3, original size 2,048 x 1,536:

Looks pretty good.

I would love to have seen this launch with a $.99 iPhone app, and a $2.99 iPad version - then the two apps stay in sync with iCloud. This is what Tiny Wings did and it is working great. Your progress in the app stays in sync between your devices and people are more likely to buy a $.99 iPhone app, love it, and then purchase the more expensive iPad version later.

Game looks awesome. I never played the 1st one so will try this one.

Question, I know this is a mac forum, but any plans to release this on Android? I'm debating if I should get this on my iPhone 4 or wait to download on my Nexus 7.

Non-multi platform games are dealbreakers. The first one $2.99 on iPhone and $7.99 for the iPad? You gotta be kidding! I was about to buy the new App and then I saw, no iPad support, read through here that they wait for input from the iPhone App and then will come out with the 2nd one on the iPad. Sorry guys, not with me. I buy quite a bit of Apps, but I won't pay twice for the same one.

Yeah I'm baffled by modern iOS games that release a separate iPhone and iPad version... with a universal app, iCloud save syncing is trivial.

At least give us the option - When you release that more expensive iPad version, make it a universal app. Nobody will buy both versions because their progress won't sync so you won't lose any money there...

Just a note after playing it for a few days that I love it. I was a big fan of the first one when it came out. This one is a great followup. Well done Subatomic!
