Ah, then you could try VLC Player, but the subtitles might still look awful, unless you could find external subtitles via OpenSubtitles.org and embed them (though Movist embeds them more beautiful, but it can't play video DVDs as far as I know).
On rare occasion the DVD might also have Close Captioning instead of just subtitles. OS X's DVD Player does a much nice job of rendering them but the placement and sound effects might make it awkward.
