Subscription for itune rentals?

I thought I read somewhere that with the introduction of ipad- Apple would offer subscriptions on rentals. I often wondered why so many Apple geeks use Netflix vs the Atv and it's no doubt the one time monthly fee (about the cost of 2 rentals from itunes) that allow you to stream as many films as you want.

Is Apple going this way or not?
