Subsidized Contracts

AT&T wants a $700 security deposit from me to sign up for service with them and get an iPhone for the subsidized price.

My question? If I buy an iPhone from somewhere at an unsubsidized price, would I still have to pay the deposit they want from me now? Would I still have to sign a two year contract with them?

Not to beat a dead horse... but does anyone have any comments?

I thought the security deposit (or part of it) was for the service. Basically your credit either sucks or you don't have any so they can't trust you.
