Subtitles lost through airplay?

Streaming Game of Thrones and any time the dothraki speak in their made up language (which is pointless as it wasn't in the book for obvious reasons) the subtitles only show if I disconnect airplay and watch on the smaller screen. Does anybody know why or if there is a workaround for this?
