My hard drive completely crashed on Thursday (it is terrible timing, too -- a lot for which I depend on notes inside it is fast approaching). I just bought this totally maxed-out 13-inch MBP last August. No, I wasn't backing up my data -- lesson learned the hard way. Anyway, took it to Apple Store and they referred me to a 3rd-party Mac data recovery specialist. Looks like they're able to save most if not all of it and they also handle warranty replacement, but it's $200 down the tube and I've learned these hard drives are failing at a surprisingly common rate.

You're lucky it was only $200. Sounds like it was not a severe failure but something recovery software could handle. Hardware failures can run in the $1000's if at all possible.

I had the same thing happen to me last week. Luckily I have been using Dropbox for all my important documents and Time Machine to cover everything else. I would highly recommend you check both out!
