Suddenly Apple Mail won't download Gmail

I am not sure if Gmail is having problems right now but it started last night. The activity wheel spins and spins but new messages aren't downloaded. I rebuilt the mailbox and it was able to download all of the current messages but now it just keeps spinning and spinning. Very odd. I have been using it for years now and have not had any issues or changed any preferences. Any ideas?

Gmail goes down for short periods pretty frequently. Restart the Mail app and be patient.

yup that's probably what it is. Right now Mail says it is downloading 53000 messages.....so I'll be patient
