I don't have a mac but use iTunes together with my iPhone.

I don't want my iTunes library to clog up my laptop so want to store my movies on an external hard drive but want to be able to watch these movies on an extarnal TV.

Am looking for an external hard drive where .mp4 and .mov can be played on a TV, so I'm guessing it will have to be a 'multi media' type hard drive and not just a normal one as have found before a Tv will not recogonize these file formats.

Any suggestions to a drive that will store and play these onto a TV?

Question: does your laptop have a FireWire port? If it does, get an external drive that supports FireWire connections--they should be fast enough to play back video stored on that external drive. :)

When you say Multimedia hard drive, do you mean one like this Lacie that connects directly to a tv?: http://www.slashgear.com/lacie-lacinema-classic-hd-1tb-1080p-hd-and-dlna-2464357/

Or do you mean a NAS that connects to your network and can serve your audio and video without a computer running?

I guess something like that, ideally I want to store itunes on an external drive, so the movies will be in either .mp4 or .mov format, but also with the capability to plug the drive into a TV and watch the films on there as well.

I did buy a Lacie drive before which had itunes on it with all my movies but they wouldnt play on a TV.
