I'm looking for a USB 3 enclosure that holds 3 to 4 HDDs. Don't need or want RAID capability. Would like to pay no more than $60 for a 3 bay or $80 for a 4 bay. Most important thing is rock solid OS X compatibility b/c I come across a few USB3 enclosures w/ controllers than are not really Mac happy despite USB3 being a standard.

Your problem is that you want rock-solid compatibility, but don't want to pay for it. I chose to pay near $400 each for Thunderbolt enclosures that NEVER EVER disconnect randomly like USB3 enclosures do.

As far as I can tell, Apple has had a problem with USB3 disconnections since OS X 10.8.4. It's not as bad as back then, but it still happens to one of my machines running 10.11.3 when put to sleep.
