I'd appreciate all recommendations. Not sure I understand how to connect MBP to monitor. I'm not a designer, just want a bigger monitor for office. All suggestions are appreciated + help understanding connection.

research showed that how bigger your screen is (in resolution like 1920 by 1200, that's really big, on 17 inch or 1024 by 800 on 30", then is de 17" better) the more productive/faster you are. So I'd say (which I did) go for the biggest screen. Your macbook pro has a mini DVI connector. It's specially from apple. So you need to buy a mini DVI to VGA connector (I guess it's 30 dollars from the apple store). Only when you have a really big screen you need mini DVI to DVI. But you'll probably can ask what the connection is (try google for pictures). For the rest it's just plug and play.

I agree with the previous poster in getting the largest screen possible and knowing your price range would be helpful for making suggestions. Also, the Macbook Pro has a dual-link DVI connector, not a mini-DVI, so you would need a dual-link DVI cable.

I'd like to keep the price around $200 more or less. I appreciate everyone helping me understand the connection issue!

Dell's displays are generally good values for the money. Something such at the Dell E207WFP 20" monitor for $219 might be a good choice for you:

As for cords, something such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189046
should work. The Macbook Pro has a DVI-I port (which can support both Digital and Analog) but that Dell display has a DVI-D port (which can only support Digital) so using a DVI-D to DVI-D cable should be fine. They also have longer cables if you need them as well.
