I'm struggling to download OSX El Capitan to make a bootable USB for my 2009 MBP - the download is extremely slow, varying from 11 hours to about 18 hours. From reading around, I suspect this download will crap out at some point. I've seen people mentioning some things about changing the DNS, but this seems to be related to wireless connections, whereas I'm using wired (the wireless is playing up).

Can anyone suggest how to fix this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Stop the download. Close the App Store. Move the El Capitan installation app from /Applications/ folder to the trash and try it a few hours later. I downloaded All OS X / macOS installers (which have fresh Apple certificates) from 10.9 to 10.14 in the last two days and the Yosemite (10.10.5) download was also very slow. 5-6 times slower than my connection and the other installer downloads.
