My optical drive has issues

It will recognize and play CDs and DVDs with content already on them (i.e. commercial music CDs, movie DVDs, or CDs/DVDs with data/music/movies burned on them, etc)

It will recognize and burn to blank DVDs

It will barely ever recognize a blank CD (spits it out after a few secs) and when it does and actually initializes a burn, it will get to about :18sec remaining and hang there, spit it out and show a failure due to a medium write error.

This problem has existed for a while and gotten worse over time. At first I thought it was because of cheap blank CD brand (Dynex), but after having tried Memorex and Sony the problem still remains.

I have a couple weeks left on the original warranty.. is there anything I can try myself to help this or does this sound like a hardware issue that requires a Superdrive replacement?
