Superdrive problems

Hey guys, long time lurker here. I have a 2008 MBP and my disks get swallowed up everytime. Whenever I need to put in a new one I've got to spend an hour plus using the credit card trick to get it out. Is that caused by a problem I can fix myself? If not, am I better off paying to get it fixed or just to buy an external drive? Thanks
