I've been moaning about my faulty superdrive for months now. Well, last night I got the nerve to take apart my iMac and replace the beast. Thanks to the excellent article on xlr8yourmac.com, the process was less stressful than I had imagined.
I installed an LG GSA-4163B 16X dual-layer burner. It, I believe, supports all formats. It was immediately recognized by System Profiler but listed as "not burn supported." After a quick and easy install of Patchburn 3, I was up and running. I've already imported a CD, burned a CD, and watched a DVD. In addition, the drive is relatively quiet. It might be a nice alternative to a Pioneer 109 drive. At about $90 US, it was definitely priced right.
Cheers,
Squire
