Superdrive required for Boot Camp?

I know the documentation via Apple claims it is required but are there any other methods or work arounds to use a shared drive?

Can any external drive me used or does it have to be the Superdrive?

No. Create an ISO image of the Windows disc on another machin and use an external USB hard drive or USB key.

Any USB CD/DVD drive can be used.

I used a LaCie external DVD drive to install Windows 7 on a MacBook Pro.
