I seem to remember that when the 15" was introduced (oh so long ago), the reasoning behind the non-dl was for size requirements. As in, we would love to put a really up-to-date superdrive in here, but we can't find one that fits in a 1" space. Now, here comes the 17" and lo and behold it's got a much better superdrive and still fits in 1". Did I imagine this, or did some manufacturer suddenly rise to the occasion?

On the 15" MBP the keyboard intrudes on the space required by the DL superdrive. The 17" has the extra space needed, so the DL superdrive fits right in. Nothing devious about that.
