i just did the supplementary update for 10.13.6. During the update my mbp rebooted quiete a few times and the overall update took about 30 mins. Its my first macbook and didn’t expect it to take this long. How long did the supplementary update take on your macbook?

I have a 13 inch 16/256 2018 mbp.

It includes firmware updates etc to remedy the throttling issue, so that's normal

Otherwise they normally wouldn't take that long

I don't remember how long it took, but updates can take a while. I would say the best way to see it is "it takes as long as it takes".

The 2018 MBP update included low level firmware updates due to the throttling issue as raab mentioned, but there is no way to predict exactly what is in any given update. So you should plan for them to take a while and I wouldn't recommend doing them when you need to use the computer immediately. Good rule of thumb is kick them off when you're done with it for the day and you can pick it up fresh without any interruptions.

Mine also took about a 1/2hr but the scary part was when it powered off, I thought maybe something had gone wrong, I tried hitting the power button, but it just sat there looking "dead" for a few minutes until it turned back on. After that it was smooth sailing with the update.
On a side note, is OSX doing updates now like Windows 10? Because I kept seeing the notification to restart for updates, but I told it to remind me later that night. About an hr later, I'm working on something and it shutdown on it's own to start the update process... I sat there blank faced because I was in the middle of typing something.

OSX has had deferred updates for a while, just like Windows.
