Maybe it only means Microsoft artificially held down production to generate a fake "out of stock" result, or maybe they have a mega-hit on their hands.

Good for them. It's a high quality product at a bargain item price - even without the support of legacy apps.

It would also have been foolish for MS to over-produce and under-sell. Even if supply levels are artificially kept low, it can still be a resounding hit like the Nintendo Wii. I mean how long was that basically impossible to walk into a store and buy?

Imagine if Microsoft ends up selling 10-15 million Surface RT/Pro per quarter by 2014. That would be a gigantic new profit engine in addition to everything else. Ballmer would be considered a hero and could retire in peace.
