I see that the silver X has a metal frame surround that's a bright polished stainless steel. But for the life of me I can't figure out what color the black X's surround is. In some pics it looks color matched black, and in others it looks like it might be the polished SS.

Anyone know with any certainty?

So exact same surround as on the silver X, correct? I'm trying to decide which one, and if they both have the shiny SS then I'll go for the silver one.

Taken from the Apple site:

"Surgical‑grade stainless steel.
The stainless steel band that wraps around and reinforces iPhone X is a special Apple-designed alloy that’s both durable and more pure, and it polishes beautifully. For the space grey finish, we use a process called physical vapour deposition to precisely match the colour of the stainless steel band to that of the glass."

Now I like my devices/jewellery in black or the darkest option so I originally desired the Space Grey.
Then I found out the colour on the stainless steel was a coating, so fearing scratches that can't be polished out like with plain stainless steel, I decided on the off white(?) iPhone X.

Then I researched PVD coating and discovered that it is more hard wearing and scratch resistant than bare SS.

So now I'm still a bit undecided. I'm confident any minor abrasions/scratches on the plain SS will polish out no probs with a Cape Cod cloth or similar.
But I prefer the look of the Space Grey and the PVD coated sides may be harder wearing but how much so is unknown.

What would have been ideal would have been the same DLC (diamond like carbon) coating the Space Black Apple Watch has. I've had mine since launch (series 0) and there is not one blemish on it. But alas, no.

I think I will go with the silver model. I like the black, but I'm also not one to appreciate scratches, which is why I avoided the Jet black model last year. So silver will likely be my first choice. I wish Apple had one more other color option to add to the silver and black, but that likely to be added in 2018.

Ahh, so the surround on the space grey one is space grey, and NOT shiny SS. With the bare SS I wouldn't worry about scratches, but would expect fine scratches and swirls which add character IMO, and which I would assume can be polished out. Hmm still leaves me undecided, black on black or white on silver.

Definitely not black like the Apple Watch, more of a space grey tint.
