Surround sound on Win7 via Bootcamp...

My rMBP has been ordered and I am trying to gather knowledge and items to get things setup.

I have already ordered a mini toslink adaptor to plug into the end of my current toslink cable.

Does Windows properly pass 5.1 sound using an appropriate application? Say if I have a movie running in VLC with the spdif / surround output enabled?

In my experience using a 2010 Macbook Pro with Windows 7 the audio on the Mac OS side is way way louder than on the Windows side. On certain stuff yes the audio is really clear. I have only tested it on 2.1 speakers I assume though everything should work great on 5.1
