Surround Sound - Volume controls on KB not working/Greyed out - How to Ungrey?

Hi,

Basically I've got a surround sound setup, however when I choose this on the system preferences, the volume on the task bar is greyed out. Also, I can't use the Apple Wireless Keyboard volume controls.

Anyone have a workaround around this?

This is normal behavior. The surround sound method is optical, thus the Mac amplifier is not used. Amplification is performed outside of the Mac. Use the volume on the amp.
