Hi

If our Samsung QLED TV gives us surround sound via its optical out to an external amplifier for both the built in apps and an XBOX, would we also get surround sound for an Apple TV 4K via the HDMI input ?

Depends on port installed on devices, if both are 2.1 then everything might be good!

Sure, but optical users like yourself might need update to tvOS 14.5 for full surround compatibility, due to a bug with earlier versions of tvOS 14 (tvOS 13 works fine.) Definitely recommended for my Surround Speaker Check app.
