Surround Speaker Check for tvOS is an A/V utility app designed to help Apple TV users determine if their surround sound system is optimized for iTunes HD movies and TV shows. This innovative tvOS app works by streaming specially produced music tracks encoded in the same Dolby Digital Surround format used for iTunes HD movies and TV shows. As the tracks play back through the Apple TV, users follow along with audio and visual cues to determine if their system is properly decoding the Dolby Digital sound track.

Surround Speaker Check can be downloaded for free on the new tvOS App Store. [Enter Surround Speaker Check in the tvOS App Store Search Menu.]

Brilliant app! Been using it to test my sound system.

Are you working on one for 7.1 systems?

Thanks! Yes, I plan to add 7.1 support in the near future. Mainly waiting for the proverbial dust to settle as Apple continues to tweak surround support for the new Apple TV...

I would like an spp for calibration of surround system, anyone seen an app that does that?

Surround Speaker Check app uses specially produced tracks to allow you test the following:
- Speaker set-up
- Dolby Surround decoding
- Overall speaker output levels
Additionally:
- Subwoofer performance (frequency response)
- Subwoofer crossover setting (audible effectiveness)
- Center speaker performance (response and effectiveness)

Surround Speaker Check is designed to give you a quick-and-easy way to test your system. If the test tracks reveal any irregularities, your next step would be to consult your receiver manual on how to make the necessary adjustments, including how to perform a full speaker level calibration, if needed.

Version 1.2 recently updated to employ higher-quality Dolby Digital Plus format surround sound audio files! Yum!

My AVR has the ability to do an audio analysis using a microphone placed in the listening position. Does your app offer anything that using the AVR would not catch?

Your built-in AVR diagnostic feature helps you perform essential speaker calibration during initial installation. However, my app will:

- Let you know if your AVR is properly decoding Dolby Digital 5.1.
- Let you hear/assess your individual speakers in isolation using music (as opposed to white noise).

The 3rd and 4th tracks (available via IAP) focus in on the subwoofer and center channel speakers. (I have received several emails from folks praising my Subwoofer Check track for helping them discover serious issues with their home theater set-ups!)

Try it out & let me know what you think! - the basic 5.1 check tracks are free!

Thanks for that info. I will try it.

Hi Garlaen,

I'm currently wrapping up production on new surround sound music for an upcoming Surround Sound Ear Candy update. Once that is finally out the gate, I can turn my attention back towards 7.1 for SSSC.

Thanks for asking! Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas you'd like me to consider for the next update.

Jeff
