Sorry if this is in the wrong category, I wasn't sure where to put it.
I'd like to buy an 8TB drive for recoding with EyeTV on my Mac Pro 5,1. Since all bigger "desktop" drives seem to use SMR now, which is inacceptible, I wonder if one of those drives that are marketed as "surveillance" drives would be advisable for this purpose? Basically it's the same workload, constant sequential recording, isn't it?

Buy a WD easystore or element and shuck the drive for the enclosed hard drive. You either get a “white” or “red” NAS drive for a fraction of cost for the TB. However, you may need do some additional research whether such drive will work on Mac. It will work on PC (with alteration to cover the 3rd pin or use molex cable) or NAS drive.
