What is it about "not beautiful, regular" people which can sing, that makes Brits go friggen loony for?

Not to lessen their talent, but I mean, isnt this just a gimmick that will peter out like all the rest?

We like the underdog. We like it when people that are probably generally passed over most of the time suddenly show they have something special to offer.

I have no preference, but good for both of them.

I don't know but maybe pretty and mediocre have gotten boring. edit: or what e said.

I think Paul Potts was slightly more "wow" but maybe Susan needs a bit more polishing up.

I have to say, the Susan Boyle video was pretty amazing to watch
Watching the crowd (and judges) turn... well, goose bumps

I like Paul Potts voice better, but I've got to hand it to Susan for doing what she's doing. She strikes me as being a much more 'regular' person. Paul has CDs out, so he's kind of on the train already..

The editing on that video made me laugh. But I was totally sucked in. She was great.

Apparently he's had a number 1 album in 15 countries since winning the show

I see. I didn't realize that. I only know what I saw on CNN.com this morning. Her smiling face greeted me (and no, that's not being sarcastic. She does have a friendly smile)

Its not just brits, Americans are going nuts over the Susan Boyle thing too, I am pretty sure the producers find these people and send them out expecting these types of reactions.

Since 99% of the people who "make it" in the music industry do so because of their looks more so than their actual talent, people expect everyone who can sing to be hot.

I Dream a Dream....of Wild Horses

Susan Boyle is quite clearly demonstrating that she's no flash-in-the-pan, she's got the goods. She astonished viewers of Britain's Got Talent with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream," but now she's knocking many other singers out of the park with her first single, which is to be part of an upcoming album entitled "I Dreamed a Dream," due in stores after November 23, 2009 (actual release date depends upon the country).

Have a listen to her singing the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" at http://www.susanboylemusic.com/music or take a look at videos on YouTube of her appearance on America's Got Talent a short time ago.....

I really think you have this right. Sdashiki's comment just feels rather shallow and misguided. Unfortunately, it's the thought of all too many.

I have no preference, I am glad for both because they have more talent then many American Idol winners.

That is what was so astonishing about Susan Boyle's performance at Britain's Got Talent. This somewhat dowdy-looking middle-aged lady with wild hair marched out on the stage and at Simon's questioning, announced that she wanted to be a professional singer like Elaine Paige. The audience and even the judges were thinking, "oh, come on......" Well, yes, it was the biggest surprise, wasn't it, when this woman opened her mouth and out floated pitch-perfect, beautiful music?

Since then Susan Boyle's life has never been the same and there have been a lot of ups-and-downs, but one thing which remains constant is the power and beauty of that voice.....

What is it about not beautiful, regular people who can sing OK ( not great, just OK) on our talent contest shows that makes foreigners go damn loony for?

Seriously - Boyle didn't even win the damn show she was a part of, so clearly we didn't go that loony for her.

To be honest, I don't rate Boyle as a singer. She's a far better 'story' than she is an actual singer. She's perfectly competent, no doubt about that, but there were people in the same competition who were much much better.

Potts is OK. Again - not even the best on the show, clearly not classically trained and to really do justice to the material he sings, you need to be.

I don't get the fuss about either of them.

I'll agree with that. I prefer Paul's voice to Susan's, but both do an excellent job.

Susan's had a hard time dealing with the public, and I think enjoys more 'hype' if that's the word; Paul came, landed a few CDs and you don't hear of him now much.
