I just purchased and macbook pro 15" core 2 duo 2.66ghz for 879 at best buy... i know awesome deal.. new too not openbox. However I am wondering if i can just pull the 500 GB out of my 13" and put it in my 15" and or will it mess up my os?

I know on windows this wouldnt work however I am hoping it will on apple

It should work, Just make sure the old drive is updates to the minimum OS version for your new 15"

Physically, the drive swap should work with no problems, you will need a #00 philips head screwdriver (be sure to put these tiny screws back in the same location), and a Torx 6 driver for the mounting nuts on the side of the drive.
After you swap the drives you may need to run the combo 10.6.4 updater and the software update in the system preferences pane to make sure you have the latest drivers for that specific computer.
