Mid 2009 15 inch.

The black keys look ugly and old IMO, so is there a way to replace them with silver keys?

The silver keys from the prior revisions (None UniBody) will not work. However there may be an aftermarket of coloured keys on eBay.

As far as I know, you'll have to paint them individually. Or trade in your MBP for an older version.

The glass screen, aluminium body and glass trackpad look great on my 4 year old unibody MacBook. Not so much the keyboard. Made of plastic, the keys have now work out and you can see the glossy patches where it has worn out.

silver keys would be painted silver, that would wear down eventually too

I think not. How would the keyboard backlight shine through a millimetre or so of solid aluminium?

On my 2006 model they were a coated plastic.

you believe?

Yes. I said I believe because I wasn't sure whether it was aluminium or plastic. Either way, my point was that it held up better then the black keys on the current unibody MacBooks.

How would the keyboard backlight shine through a millimetre of black plastic? Obviously the actual lettering of the keys are painted different colour to the rest of the keys.

The black keys were a good improvement in comparision to the silver keys of the powerbook. Readability was not always good with backlight on in certain light conditions.

Because aluminum isn't clear nor would it be "painted". The keys probably start out as a translucent plastic (similar to the letter on the key) and is coated and the letter is burned out for the light to shine through. Something along the lines of that at least. The only way for light to shine through an aluminum key is to remove the material to make the shape of the letter, which IMO would look bad and probably get filled with dirt/dust easily.

It's translucent bit is not black plastic, that's how. They can do clever stuff when forming plastics nowadays.

Between the actual question and the idea of light shinning through solid aluminum I'm beginning to loose IQ points...

Actually, apple made the sleep indicator led shine through aluminum by laser drilling tiny tiny holes through the aluminum. If they did that with aluminum keys it would be so freaking awesome...
