Swap question... (or 3gs -> 4s THEN swap)

So my wife has a 3gs, and she is upgrade eligible. She doesn't necessarily care about the 4s and plans to upgrade so that I can have the 4s and she can take my 4.

I know we can call at&t and do an upgrade swap, but without calling can someone tell me it would also work to just have her activate the 4s on her account (so she would then have a sim swappable with the 4) and then we swap sims (4 for 4s) at that point?

I want to do the exact same thing, and am curious as well.

I chatted with an AT&T employee today and they said you would have to call BEFORE activating the phone, but I don't always trust those folks!

Can anyone explain why you couldn't just swap SIM's once the new phone was activated?

That's all you need to do. AT&T calls it a "Complex Upgrade", and it's explained here:
