Hi friends,

I can't seem to find any teardowns of the 11" 2012 Macbook Airs. I'm thinking about getting a 13" for my wife and an 11" for myself (both 2012 models).

Long story short, I'd like to swap the SSDs between the computers when they arrive. Precedent seems to indicate that this would be possible, but I can't seem to confirm this.

Has anyone taken their 11" 2012 Macbook Air apart? Are the SSDs the same size between the 2012 models? Thanks!

Yes, they're the same size.

Since you have not bought them yet, why not just buy them with the right sized SSD in the first place.

Any reason for doing the swap?
By swapping the SSD's you may well be invalidating the Apple warranty as there is a question if Apple consider the SSD to be a user upgradable

What? It's like saying Apple is voiding the warranty of the MacBook Air just because the user replaced the USB inside it.

And yes, I know it isn't a USB, it's an SSD.

Method to my madness

I need more computing power and don't need much storage; my wife needs more storage and not much computing power. It is cheaper to max out an 11" MBA and add a 256GB SSD and buy a stock 13" MBA than to max out the 11" MBA and buy the 13" MBA with a 256 SSD.

kodeman53, How did you verify this info?

Thanks!

Is it really cheaper?

I tried it with the Apple US Store and it seems like the same price.

11"|i7|8GB|256GB = $1,649
13"|i5|4GB|128GB = $1,199
Total is $2,848

11"|i7|8GB|128GB = $1,349
13"|i5|4GB|256GB = $1,499
Total is $2,848

You're right.

I had some other discounts, in conjunction with our upcoming tax free weekend, that made swapping the SSDs cheaper.

Your tax free weekend covers that much? damn.

Also, can anyone comment on the physical size of the 512gb drive?
I've heard rumors, but can't confirm, that this drive is a tad wider (like taller), and won't fit in the 11". Perhaps that's just a wild rumor.

What's the source of these rumors you've heard? It's not just a wild rumor, it's a false and stupid rumor.
